Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include piano music by Bartók and Weber, music by Ennio Morricone arranged for classical guitar, choral music from Latin America, and new editions from Bärenreiter of music by Suk, Brahms, and François Couperin.

Bartók: Easy Piano Pieces and Dances

This collection gathers together some of Bartók’s easy to moderately difficult pieces, including a wide variety of dance forms and folk-music miniatures. Besides familiar works, it also contains several that have never before been edited. Two pieces handed down as fragments have been judiciously completed by the editor. Care has been taken to provide a spacious engraving and practical page turns.

Grieg: Piano Concerto in A minor Op. 16 (Piano Reduction)

This new edition of one of the most famous of piano concertos is based on an in-depth revision of the existing Edition Peters version. The piano reduction of the orchestral part has been revised in accordance with the Grieg Complete Edition, while the solo part has been reviewed and corrected with reference to the two main sources.

Couperin: Pièces de clavecin. Second livre (1717) for Harpsichord

Bärenreiter presents Book II of François Couperin’s Pièces de clavecin, including as an appendix the eight preludes and one allemande from his treatise L’Art de toucher le clavecin. Editor Denis Herlin has evaluated the many later impressions of the original print, most of which he unearthed himself in libraries.

The Classical Film Collection (Piano)

The Classical Film Collection brings together famous classical pieces used in movies, including pieces from films such as Black Swan, Out of Africa, Chariots of Fire, and, for the first time in print, House of Woodcock by Jonny Greenwood, from Phantom Thread. All pieces have been arranged for the intermediate pianist.

Carl Maria von Weber: Piano Sonatas

These four piano sonatas by Weber (opp. 24, 39, 49, and 70) are edited from the text of the Carl Maria von Weber Complete Edition.

Howard Goodall: Invictus - A Passion (Vocal Score)

Howard Goodall's Invictus: A Passion seeks to address one of the most dramatic religious stories through the lens of a diverse, modern world. Orchestral & Chamber Music

Suk: Symphony in C minor op. 27 "Asrael" (Full Score)

The principal source for Bärenreiter's new edition of Josef Suk's Asrael Symphony is the first edition of the score from 1907, supplemented by the corrections Suk entered at the suggestion of conductor Václav Talich. The most significant change was the expansion of the orchestra to include ad libitum parts for the fifth and sixth horns, which are included in this score.

Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor op. 34 (Score and Parts)

Bärenreiter’s new critical edition is based on Brahms's autograph as well as the first edition, and also draws on the autograph of the two-piano version (composed six years later). The edition also contains a discussion of the work’s historical context and performance practice as well as a comprehensive critical commentary with an evaluation of the sources and alternative readings.
