Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include piano music by Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin, string quartets by Schumann and Gershwin, song collections for developing voices, music from the Disney Pixar film, Coco, and an anthology of Elton John's greatest hits.

Beethoven: Piano Sonata in A flat major, op. 26 "Funeral March"

For this Bärenreiter edition, Jonathan Del Mar consulted Beethoven's autograph, enabling him to decipher details of the composer's handwriting with regard to the exact notation of doubtful slurs. Differing readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary.

Beethoven: Five Favorite Piano Sonatas

This title from G. Schirmer includes five of the most popular of Beethoven's piano sonatas: the Sonata in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 and four of the "named" sonatas (Pathétique, Moonlight, The Tempest, and Les Adieux).

Chopin: Scherzo in C sharp minor, op. 39

Chopin’s Scherzo no. 3 was written in connection with his winter spent in Mallorca in 1838/39. This Henle Urtext is based on the first editions and on a manuscript copy. Footnotes and a condensed Critical Report offer information on the many variants in the history of its musical text.

Schubert: Piano Sonata in G major, op. 78 D894

Bärenreiter's Urtext edition presents Schubert's sonata in a spacious new engraving with practical page turns, accompanied by notes on key questions of performance practice such as pedalling and Schubert’s characteristic way of writing accents. Rounding off the edition is a Critical Commentary containing alternative readings of relevance to the performer.

Dvořák: Humoresque in G flat major, op. 101 nr. 7

Many a pianist will be surprised to learn that Dvořák's famous Humoresque No. 7 was originally a piano piece, since this irresistible melody has circulated throughout the musical world in innumerable arrangements. The composer himself, however, wrote only this piano solo version.

Scott Joplin: Ragtime

Easy arrangements for piano

Most listeners associate ragtime with the music of Scott Joplin, who brought this musical style to the pinnacle of perfection. This collection offers simplified versions of several favourites, including Maple Leaf Rag, The Entertainer, The Strenuous Life, and others.

Bach for Violin

14 pieces arranged for violin and piano

A varied collection of fourteen popular pieces arranged for upper-intermediate standard violinists (Grades 5-7). Antonio Vivaldi: 5 Sonatas for Violin and Basso Continuo

A collection of five Vivaldi sonatas for violin and basso continuo published by Ricordi: RV8 in C minor, RV12 in D minor, RV23 in G major, RV25 in G major, and RV36 in B minor.

Oskar Rieding: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 36

Reduction for Violin and Piano

Oskar Rieding is known to young violinists for his easy-to-play concertos. In op. 36, which remains entirely in first position, catchy melodies are coupled with technical difficulties such as quaver arpeggios, semiquaver runs, and chromaticism, appearing in small measures throughout the entire work.

Maurice Ravel: Sonata for Violin and Piano

This new printing of Ravel's sonata is part of Durand's "Musique française" series, designed for students and teachers as well as professionals. These editions offer masterworks in French music, with performance suggestions and historical and stylistic commentary by noted scholars.

Bréval: Sonata in C major, op. 40/1

Transcribed for Cello and Piano

Jean-Baptiste Bréval was a member of the orchestra at the Paris Opéra and also a prolific composer. He is perhaps best-known for this sonata, which has become a standard work for teaching purposes. The two movements (Allegro and Rondo Grazioso) can also be performed independently from one another.

Schumann: String Quartets, op. 41 nos. 1-3 (Study Score)

Schumann made extensive changes to these quartets before publication in December 1842. The present edition offers an invaluable glimpse into Schumann’s creative process, identifying and restoring all the deletions, changes, and the original phrasing. The parts are configured so that the quartets can also be performed in the traditional form.

George Gershwin: Lullaby for String Quartet (Study Score)

In 1919-20 George Gershwin was making a name for himself on Broadway, but he was also attracted to the world of classical music. He took an intensive course in composition, during which he wrote this brief Lullaby for string quartet as an exercise, probably in 1919, although it did not appear in print for the first time until 1968.

Saint-Saëns: The Carnival of the Animals

Arranged for two flutes

Jennifer Seubel and Sally Beck, the flautists of “Duo Noble”, have arranged Saint-Saëns’s complete work for two flutes. The results exploit the full tonal spectrum of the flute, and there are several alternatives given to expand the range of sound, including the use of a piccolo in movements such as Poules et coqs and Aquarium.

Rameau: Naïs (Vocal Score)

1749 and 1764 Versions

Rameau's opera was premiered in 1749 and revived in 1764 shortly before his death. It appears here for the first time in a vocal score with a keyboard reduction. This Bärenreiter edition is the result of a meticulous comparison of all known sources; an appendix contains passages that the composer cut during rehearsals in 1749 and all changes that he made for the 1764 revival.

Disney Pixar's Coco for Piano, Vocal, & Guitar

Here are seven songs from the 2017 animated film from Disney/Pixar, Coco, which follows the story of a boy named Miguel. The volume includes the signature song Remember Me by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez.

Elton John: Diamonds (Piano, Vocal, & Guitar)

Released to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of his songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin, Diamonds is the ultimate greatest hits collection from Elton John. It includes all his landmark hits such as Your Song, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, Candle In The Wind, Can You Feel The Love Tonight?, and many more, as well as his duet with George Michael, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

Facsimile of the autograph score held in the Bibliothèque nationale de France

Berlioz revised his Symphonie fantastique for years before it finally reached its definitive version. He entered many of these changes in the autograph score by pasting strips of paper over the parts in question. This facsimile edition, in high-quality four-colour reproduction, presents the manuscript as it is today – with strips of paper that can be folded out, making both versions visible.
