New Release Round-up, New Release Round-Up - 15th November 2024

Emile Londonien

There are two contrasting new releases from ECM this week: Colin Vallon Trio’s Samares, which blends organic grooves and chamber-like intimacy, and Stephan Micus’s To the Rising Moon combines global instruments to create a celestial tapestry of sounds. Jon Batiste’s Beethoven Blues reimagines Beethoven with blues-infused rhythms while the the Emile Londonien band’s Inwards merges broken beat, jazz, house, and R&B in a boundary-pushing, genre-blending album. And from the archives Oscar Peterson’s City Lights from 1994 captures his post-illness artistic reinvention, and Michel Petrucciani’s 1988 Jazzhus Montmartre performance showcases lyrical brilliance.

Colin Vallon Trio

Swiss pianist Colin Vallon’s Samares captures nature’s influence—particularly plants—through organic grooves and telepathic interplay with bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Julian Sartorius. Building on the trio's dynamic evolution since 2017's Danse, the album explores rhythmic twists, art-rock-inspired harmonies, and chamber-like intimacy. Unified by themes of motion and connection, Samares completes a poetic trilogy.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV

Stephan Micus

Stephan Micus’s To the Rising Moon, his 26th ECM solo album, showcases a global array of instruments, led by the Colombian tiple’s bright, plucked tones. Darker bowed strings contrast this lightness, with the two worlds converging in the meditative title track. Evoking a celestial hymn, Micus crafts an unparalleled musical journey through diverse traditions and serene, imaginative soundscapes.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC/ALAC/WAV, Hi-Res FLAC/ALAC/WAV

This pure piano album reimagines classics through blues-infused rhythms and melodies, honouring Beethoven’s innovation and relevance. Batiste calls it a creative partnership, bridging eras with artistry and divine inspiration.
