Jazz New Release Round-Up - 26th January 2023
The latest new jazz releases include the much-hyped Phoenix by saxophonist and composer Lakecia Benjamin, the second trio recording by pianist Eyolf Dale, and new albums on ACT Music by Johanna Summer and Wolfgang Haffner. Also featured this week is an intimate duo recording by Snarky Puppy bandmates Bill Laurance & Michael League, and long-awaited returns from jazz veterans Jesse Davis and Ed Cherry.
The hotly-anticipated new album by alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin features a plethora of high-profile guest features that include musicians Wayne Shorter and Patrice Rushen to name a couple, as well as civil rights activist Angela Davis, across her fiery set of originals collating influences from avant-garde, post-bop and funk sounds.

Eyolf Dale's latest album on Edition serves as the sophomore recording for his trio with Per Zanussi and Audun Kleive, and is an evocative journey through Dale's influences in jazz, classical and folk music.

Russian expat and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, who now calls the US his home, releases his 13th album with Criss Cross Jazz this year. No less technical and dense than any of his previous works, Mel's Vision features an all-star band with tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Johnathan Blake joining him for a set of standards and two originals.

Perhaps best known for their membership in fusion band Snarky Puppy, pianist Michael League and bassist Bill Laurance's new duo album Where You Wish You Were finds them in a very different context, making intimate and spacious compositions with a subtle world music influence.

Saxophonist Jesse Davis returns for his first full-length recording in more than two decades, showcasing his well-practiced chops in the bebop idiom backed by pianist Spike Wilner and his trio.
