New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 1st December 2022

Guitarist Mike Moreno sitting in a luthier's workshop.

The latest new jazz releases include guitarist Mike Moreno interpreting jazz standards from films, strings-augmented jazz from Gilles Grethen, solo bass recordings by Kham Meslien and a new album by Ben Crosland. There's also a reissue of Giuseppe Pucciarelli's 2017 album Shall We Say It Is Worth It on Ubuntu Music, an unearthed archival recording by the Tomasz Stańko Quintet, an all-star band recording from Franco Ambrosetti, and vinyl editions of recent releases by WDR Big Band and Stephanie Lottermoser.

Mike Moreno

As the title suggests, guitarist Mike Moreno's Standards From Film features ten standards featured in cinema, though the songs themselves are also considered by many - Moreno included - as essential repertoire for any jazz player.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Gilles Grethen Quartet

Guitarist Gilles Grethen's latest album has him recording alongside a small string ensemble, citing Charlie Parker's With Strings record and his early love for classical music as key inspirations.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Kham Meslien

Bassist Kham Meslien, formerly of the band Lo'Jo, embarks on a new solo bass outing featuring Meslien accompanied only by his own overdubs and samples, as well as poet and musician Anthony Joseph on one track.

Available Format: CD

Jazz bassist Ben Crosland's latest album, Songs of Solace and Reflection, features re-arrangements of favourites from his back catalogue as well as the new composition 'Rockfeld Lullaby'. Four decades into his career as a composer and bandleader, Crosland's new pandemic-conceptualised record explores a time when musicians collectively mourned touring life while also reflecting on their artistry.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

The Pucciarelli Group

A re-release of Giuseppe Pucciarelli's 2017 album, Shall We Say It Is Worth It is available again through Ubuntu Music under the renamed Pucciarelli Group, featuring Giuseppe Pucciarelli and his band running through a selection of guitar-led originals.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC

Tomasz Stańko Quintet

Originally stored in the archives of Radio Bremen for 50 years, Wooden Music I is the first part of a reissue series from the late Polish jazz legend Tomasz Stańko, and showcases his quintet in their relatively obscure free jazz period of which little is known about.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Franco Ambrosetti

Swiss trumpeter/composer Franco Ambrosetti's latest album features an all star band of John Scofield, Scott Colley, Uri Caine and Peter Erskine. Drawing on his bebop family lineage, Ambrosetti delivers romantic ballads accompanied by a 22-piece orchestra arranged and conducted by Alan Broadbent.
