This week's crop of new jazz releases include Emmet Cohen's Uptown in Orbit combining traditional jazz piano with modern sensibilities, Belarus-based collective SOYUZ's Brazilian-inspired third album Force of the Wind, and a reissue of the Lionel Hampton Orchestra's 1958 recording The Mess Is Here on Ezz-thetics.
Following-up last year's Future Stride, pianist Emmet Cohen cements his traditional-influenced style with a modern twist, featuring a mixture of originals and traditional tunes by Willie "The Lion" Smith, Cedar Walton, and Gerry Mulligan.

The Mess Is Here, reissued by Swiss label Ezz-thetics, features recordings by the Lionel Hampton Orchestra's triumphant return to Europe after a hugely successful tour just a few years earlier. The Hampton band was known for fostering young talent that would go on to successful solo careers, and this time the up-and-comers are pianist Oscar Dennard, tenor saxophonist Andy McGhee and vocalist Cornelius “Pinocchio” James.
