Benjamin Lackner Quartet

This week's jazz releases include two new Ezzthetics reissues of Andrew Hill and Thelonious Monk, the ECM debut of pianist Benjamin Lackner with his quartet, and a handful of classic album reissues from Waxtime.

A new reissue from Ezzthetics is Andrew Hill's 1965 classic Point of Departure and 1967's Compulsion!!!!!, both originally released on Blue Note and only recorded eighteen months apart.

Available Format: CD

The second new release from Ezzthetics this month chronicles some of the earliest recordings made by pianist Thelonious Monk - pictured here on the cover in 1947 - that established him as one of the most idiosyncratic voices in jazz.

Benjamin Lackner

Pianist Benjamin Lackner debuts on ECM with Last Decade, with a quartet featuring Manu Katché on drums, trumpeter Mathias Eick and Jérôme Regard on bass. In particular, Lackner and Regard's history goes back almost two decades to 2006 when the bassist joined Lackner's trio, and the two have remained close collaborators ever since.

Bugge Wesseltoft & Henrik Schwarz

Duo II is the follow-up to pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and electronic producer Henrik Schwarz's original 2011 collaboration, and much like Duo this second outing blurs the line between organic, acoustic performance and electronic production.

Jasper Van't Hof / Paul Heller Group

New on Jazzline this week is the collaboration between Dutch pianist Jasper Van't Hof and the band of saxophonist Paul Heller. Featuring contributed pieces by both frontmen, the title track is rather fittingly a duo improvisation between Van't Hof and Heller.

Classic reissues also out this week...

The Dave Brubeck Quartet

Fans of the Dave Brubeck classic Time Out can enjoy this double-LP reissue - which features both mono and stereo versions of the album - from Waxtime In Color out this week. Easily Brubeck's most recognisable record, on it you'll find the equally recognisable tune 'Take Five', composed by the quartet's saxophonist Paul Desmond.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Chet Baker

Similarly packaged with both stereo and mono versions included across a 2LP set, Chet Baker Sings was a landmark album for the trumpeter/vocalist that saw his audience beginning to cross over into more popular spaces, as well as including 'My Funny Valentine' which would become a staple of his live performances.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Issued on limited edition pink vinyl, the second full-length album recorded by vocalist Etta Jones in 1960 was her first hit; despite having released another album only two years prior as well as a handful of singles, it was the title track that landed her high on both pop and R&B charts, eventually selling over a million copies.
