Jazz New Release Round-Up - 8th September 2022
The latest crop of new jazz releases include an album of duos by Enrico Rava and Fred Hersch on ECM, a quartet album featuring Joshua Redman's now reunited 1990s quartet - featuring Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade - and Wayne Shorter at the Detroit Jazz Festival alongside Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese and Esperanza Spalding. Also featured is saxophonist J.D. Allen delving into the legacy of blues music with his usual bandmates Gregg August and Rudy Royston with newcomer Charlie Hunter, and a previously limited-run Tony Williams trio album from the 1980s.
This new ECM release features the meeting of two prominent jazzmen - Italian flugelhornist Enrico Rava, who is almost 50 years into his time with ECM, and American pianist Fred Hersch, with The Song Is You marking the latter's first release on the label. This duo session features improvisations, Rava and Hersch originals, and standards by Thelonious Monk, Jerome Kern and Antônio Carlos Jobim.
