This month's new releases on vinyl include 2021 releases like Australian jazz singer-songwriter Nishla Smith's debut Friends With Monsters and bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding's ambitious Songwrights Apothecary Lab, as well as albums new this year from Melody Gardot, Chet Doxas and Soccer96. As for classic reissues, there's plenty to choose from John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman and Ella Fitzgerald.

New Releases

Nishla Smith

Originally releasing last November on CD, this Australian-born, UK-based singer-songwriter's full-length debut is a concept record that explores her experiences with insomnia.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Esperanza Spalding

Another release from the latter half of 2021 - and one of our Recordings of the Week - by this renowned bassist, composer and vocalist, Songwrights Apothecary Lab is a hugely diverse set of twelve original pieces that features a roster of interchanging collaborators.

Available Formats: 2 Vinyl Records, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Melody Gardot, Philippe Powell

A brand new album from vocalist Melody Gardot and pianist Philippe Powell, recorded in Paris at the end of 2021 and featuring 'This Foolish Heart Could Love You' and 'A La Tour Eiffel'.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Saxophonist Chet Doxas' ninth album as bandleader - but his first leading a trio - releases on Whirlwind Records, joined by pianist Ethan Iverson and bassist Thomas Morgan.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Soccer96

The original band that ended up forming two thirds of London jazztronica act The Comet Is Coming, Soccer96's latest album is fuelled by their love for electronica, drum & bass, and improvised music, realised with the pair's novel combination of raw analog synths and acoustic drums.

Classics & Reissues

John Coltrane

A remastered edition of John Coltrane's seminal My Favourite Things, featuring his ambitious reinterpretation of the 'Sound of Music' classic as a lengthy modal piece, as well as Gershwin tunes 'Summertime' and 'But Not for Me'. Also featured on this double-LP edition are both the stereo and mono mixes, the latter of which was believed to be lost.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

John Coltrane

Another classic that introduced the jazz world to the infamous 'Coltrane Changes' with its title track, this reissue of Giant Steps comes on limited edition red vinyl courtesy of Waxtime In Color, featuring bonus tracks 'Why Was I Born?' and 'Fifth House' as tracks A5 and B4 respectively.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Ornette Coleman

Another seminal jazz work, this time from Ornette Coleman, is also being reissued by Waxtime on limited edition orange vinyl.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Duke Ellington & John Coltrane

This iconic duo's only ever recorded collaboration also enjoys a double-LP 'audiophile grade' repressing from Waxtime, presented in both stereo and mono versions. The recording mainly comprises Ellington tunes, with rhythm sections from both Ellington and Coltrane's bands at the time appearing on alternating tracks.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Duke Ellington's material appears again on this Ella Fitzgerald album, one of the first recorded instances of her playing with the Duke. The recordings on this album were sextet recordings made when Ellington's schedule made it difficult to record with his full band.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Ella Fitzgerald & Duke Ellington

If that wasn't already enough Ellington wax for you, we've one final reissue here, and another collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald. This time, the focus is on the big band arrangements - though due to Ellington's busy schedule at the time, there likely could've been many more - and both of these albums document one of the few times Ella and Ellington would collaborate together.
