New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 14th October 2021

Our recent crop of new jazz releases includes a deluxe reissue from Jon Batiste, an ambitious new project from Esperanza Spalding, and an excellent double-live album from Chick Corea's Akoustic Band.

Late Show pianist and bandleader Jon Batiste’s WE ARE, releasing earlier this year, saw him in a new context of soul-infused Black pop music. This new deluxe edition features six new tracks made with collaborators including Tori Kelly and Big Freedia.

Available Format: CD

BADBADNOTGOOD

The latest recording from Canadian nu-jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD returns the band to their instrumental roots with an exciting, improvisation-heavy set of tracks, with 70s Brazilian folk-rocker Arthur Verocai contributing string arrangements.

Esperanza Spalding

This new 12-track record collects the celebrated bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding’s past few months of work with various collaborators, including the three-part suite TRIANGLE released as an EP earlier this year. Each track - or ‘Formwela’ - has an intended application for the listener, and these applications are as varied as the music itself, featuring Spalding alongside one, or a whole ensemble of collaborators.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Chick Corea Akoustic Band

This new double-album from the Chick Corea Akoustic Band comprises a live set by the band recorded back in January 2018, and features over 2 hours of tunes - both original and classic standards.

Available Formats: 2 CDs, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

An interesting release here - and perhaps a nice one for the Autumnal season - is this solo piano album of English singer-songwriter Nick Drake’s 1972 album Pink Moon. Recorded by English pianist Demian Dorelli, who shares his birth year with the album, A Journey on Piano features purely solo piano interpretations of both Drake’s guitar and vocal work.

Kate McGarry & Keith Ganz Ensemble

Vocalist Kate McGarry and guitarist Keith Ganz, both jazz players by trade, come together with musicians Ron Miles and Gary Versace to cover a set of well-known pop songs, including The Beatles’ ‘Here Comes the Sun’, Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides, Now’ and Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing in the Dark’.

Available Format: CD

Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble

Grammy-winning composer, bandleader and pianist makes his Blue Note debut with ...dreaming in lions..., featuring the Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble (itself a smaller form of his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra). With the eponymous suite inspired by Ernest Hemingway and developed alongside his collaboration with the Cuban Malpaso Dance Company, O’Farrill makes a confident and conceptual debut on the heavyweight American label.
