New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 2nd September 2021

The latest jazz releases available at Presto Music include two new ECM albums from Andrew Cyrille and Marc Johnson, a revisiting of John Coltrane’s 1961 Village Vanguard set, and the third record from up-and-coming trumpet player Sean Gibbs.

Andrew Cyrille Quartet

A continuation of the Andrew Cyrille Quartet’s 2016 release The Declaration of Musical Independence, The News features the drummer’s quartet of guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Ben Street, as well as newcomer David Virelles on piano. Cyrille’s sparse arrangements keep the record feeling nice and stripped-down, and the inclusion of some of Frisell’s own music is a welcome addition to the package.

Marc Johnson

Marc Johnson’s latest recording with ECM is a collection of pieces arranged for solo double bass, some of which are favourites taken from his long career as a sideman. He revisits the Miles Davis tune ‘Nardis’, a regular from his days with the Bill Evans Trio, as well as Alex North’s ‘Love Theme from Spartacus’ and Eddie Harris’ ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’. However, much of the material on Overpass is original, including ‘Samurai Fly’ itself a reworking of ‘Samurai Hee-Haw’, a tune familiar to Johnson from his time in the John Abercrombie Trio.

With the announcement of a Live in Seattle recording from Coltrane coming from Impulse! later this year, it really seems like folks can’t get enough of those archival Coltrane tapes. This recording, taken from the Village Vanguard in 1961, features ‘Trane with a brilliant lineup of Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. The first half of this record originally appeared on the 1962 record Coltrane ‘Live’ at the Village Vanguard - making for a polarising album upon its release due to its challenging content. Also included on this Ezz-thetics reissue are an alternate take of ‘Spiritual’, as well as ‘India’ and ‘Impressions’ from 1963’s Impressions, recorded on the same night.

UK artist management and record company Ubuntu Music’s latest signing is Scottish trumpeter Sean Gibbs, his first release with the label being this year’s When Can I See You Again?. The young trumpeter’s third studio recording focuses on his own original music, Gibbs showcasing his love of groove and bluesy melody.

Teased earlier in this year, this deluxe version of Lee Morgan’s The Complete Live at the Lighthouse is a chunky set that features all the recordings made by the trumpeter and his quintet at The Lighthouse jazz club in Hermosa Beach, California. The set also includes 4 hours of previously unreleased material and a booklet including essays, interviews and photographs of the show. One for the diehard Morgan fans, for sure.

Terence Blanchard featuring The E-Collective and The Turtle Island Quartet

Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard's latest recording both features and was inspired by the music of Wayne Shorter. With the record itself presented as a tribute to the legendary saxophonist, all but one of the tracks on Absence feature the lush sounds of the Turtle Island Quartet, while Terence is joined by the electric sounds of the E-Collective throughout.
