New Release Round-up, Jazz Vinyl Round-Up - 26th August 2021

The latest jazz vinyl available at Presto Music includes reissues from Wes Montgomery and Don Rendell, as well as the latest releases from Kenny Garrett and Lars Danielsson.

Don Rendell Quintet

This excellent remaster of a British jazz classic comes to us from Gearbox Records via Decca, taken from the original master tapes. Space Walk is one of the first releases from Universal’s new series on the British jazz explosion - the other being the excellent Journeys in Modern Jazz: Britain - and Rendell was a key figure during this period, with this being one of his most consistently enjoyable releases, incredibly difficult to obtain until this recent reissue.

Available Formats: Vinyl Record, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Kenny Garrett emerged onto the American jazz scene at the age of 18 back in the late 1970s, releasing music consistently on a variety of labels, though this year’s Sounds From the Ancestors is his fifth on American label Mack Avenue. Drawing on sounds from African church music and work songs, Garrett also pays tribute to Roy Hargrove, Art Blakey and the late Tony Allen on this recording.

(Sounds From the Ancestors is also available on CD).

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra

For those who have been patiently awaiting the vinyl release of Nottingham bandleader and saxophonist Julian Siegel’s recent big-band opus Tales From the Jacquard, you’ve not got long to wait. The vinyl edition of this excellent album - which was our Recording of the Week upon its release - is a double LP set with liner notes detailing the work’s conception.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Muddy Waters

One of the latest releases in the Montreux Years series - which has included recordings by Nina Simone and Etta James - comes to us from the legendary blues guitarist and vocalist Muddy Waters, with recordings taken from three Montreux Jazz Festival concerts throughout the 1970s.

(The Montreux Years is also available on CD).

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

This tidy reissue of a guitar jazz classic comes courtesy of Pan Am Records, with a premium 180g pressing. The original recording was an incredible debut for Montgomery, whose accompanists on this recording include Tommy Flanagan, and is still widely enjoyed as one of the guitarist’s best records.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Kenny Burrell

Another classic reissue adding to the Blue Note catalogue, guitarist Kenny Burrell’s Midnight Blue is an essential for fans of 60s bebop - both B.B. King and Duke Ellington themselves cited him as their favourite guitar player. While Ray Barretto’s conga playing gives the recording a slight Latin vibe, it’s the soulful saxophone of Stanley Turrentine that kicks the proceedings up a notch.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

Jazz Furniture

Jazz Furniture was the name of a jazz ensemble including Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson, their self-titled debut something of a milestone for Scandinavian jazz. This year Jazz Furniture gets a well-deserved double LP deluxe set courtesy of Caprice Records.

Available Format: 2 Vinyl Records

Sonny Clark

Originally recorded in 1959, My Conception by pianist Sonny Clark wouldn’t be released for a full two decades, even then as a Japan-only LP, again reissued as a CD in 2000. Playing a full set of Clark originals, he managed to recruit some excellent bandmates for this session, with Donald Byrd and Hank Mobley as well as a brilliant rhythm section of Paul Chambers and Art Blakey.
