Jazz New Release Round-Up - 19th August 2021
This week’s pick of the latest jazz releases include jazz covers of David Bowie and a meeting of New York jazz vets Mike Clark and Michael Zilber.
This new archival collection on Craft Recordings features album tracks from various artists - notably Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk - that all feature saxophonist John Coltrane in sideman roles.
Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC
After a handful of quintet records, pianist Rich Pellegrin turns his attention to solo compositions, recorded in a small church near Seattle for the aptly titled Solitude.
Available Format: CD
Barely Breaking Even (BBE), who reissued the J-jazz gem First by Kosuke Mine earlier this year, present a collection of commissioned David Bowie covers by an array of modern jazz, soul and R&B artists including instrumental rockers Khruangbin, guitarist Jeff Parker and multi-instrumentalist Matthew Tavares of American nu-jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD.
Available Format: CD
A recording from 2007 at the annual Appleby Jazz Festival, Dancing in the Dark features saxophone player Tony Coe taking on the clarinet - supposedly his sax case was too heavy to lug over to the show - for an intimate duo set with pianist John Horler. What is retrospectively, perhaps nostalgically, regarded by Coe as one of his best performances finally sees the light of day this year courtesy of Gearbox Records.
