New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 29th July 2021

We’ve reissues galore in our latest new release round-up, including Albert Ayler, The Fourth World Quartet and Bill Evans, as well as new album releases by Keith Brown Trio and saxophonist Alistair Martin.

Keith Brown Trio

American pianist Keith Brown brings a new iteration of his trio to the recording of African Ripples, as well as a slew of guest appearances along the way. Centred around the variety of the African diaspora, much of African Ripples is composed of original Brown tunes, with tunes by Fats Waller and Stevie Wonder, among others, also making appearances.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

New York Eye and Ear Control was originally conceived when multimedia artist Michael Snow invited the Albert Ayler Trio, along with three other soloists, to improvise the music for his 1964 film of the same name, stating he wanted to “buy a half-hour of music”. The music is extreme - many people walked out during the film's first screening, whether from the music or the picture itself - and Ayler’s trio of himself, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray are joined by trombonist Roswell Rudd, saxophonist John Tchicai and trumpeter Don Cherry.

The Fourth World Quartet

The Fourth World Quartet was the culmination of brothers Benjamin (electric guitar, alto saxophone), Laurence (bass clarinet) and Roger (piano) Miller; growing up in the Summer of Love and playing in improvisational rock bands, their musical intake was wide, from MC5 to Stockhausen. Recorded with classmate Jack Waterstone while attending art school, this challenging release 1975 consists of compiled recordings made around the time, you can hear shades of then-contemporary psychedelic rock, as well as experimental jazz and classical music.

Available Format: CD

Another big Bill Evans archival release, Behind the Dikes unsurprisingly compiles various recordings Evans made while in the Netherlands in 1969, including a previously unreleased concert recording from Hilversum, North Holland, and a session with the Metropole Orkest. On top of this, a recording from November 1969 in Amsterdam is included, previously only available as a poor-quality bootleg. Here Evans is playing with his latter-day trio of bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, his most long-standing trio.

Available Format: 2 CDs

Barney Wilen

Originally released in 1987, this reissue of French saxophonist Barney Wilen’s album La Note Bleue includes 4 bonus takes and newly remastered audio, as well as a 28-page booklet including photographs and liner notes from French publications Jazz Magazine and Le Monde. Though he was a featured musician on Miles Davis’s Ascenseur pour l’chafaud, Wilen’s popularity started to decline in the ‘70s despite his consistent output of releases. Despite this, La Note Bleue is often seen as something of a rebirth, and is retrospectively regarded as a classic of French jazz.
