New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 26th April 2019

So, what's in the virtual pile this week? Well, Gwilym Simcock unveils his second solo piano album, Claire Martin tries more modern pop with her all-Swedish group, Hubro reissue Ketil Bjornstd's classy early solo albums on vinyl, Italian group Kino Trio impress with their blend of influences, and Sam Rivers' masterpiece Contours on vinyl - plus Trish Clowes excellent Ninety Degrees Gravity, my Recording of the Week.

Have great weekend, and please follow us on twitter @PrestoJazz - it's currently a VERY exclusive club!

Trish Clowes & My Iris

My Recording of the Week is Trish Clowes' sci-fi inspired album. See my full review here.

Available Format: CD

Gwilym Simcock

“Near and Now” is Gwilym Simcock’s second full album for solo piano, with his first being nominated for the Mercury Prize - and important step in establishing the Welsh-born pianist’s reputation internationally. Chick Corea was an early advocate - “Gwilym’s an original. A creative genius.”, and this can be heard on this dazzling series of musical tributes.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Sam Rivers

If you haven’t heard it, Contours is up there with Unit Structures (on which Rivers appears) and Out to Lunch as one of Blue Note's most important contributions towards the mid-sixties “New Thing” (not that Rivers, in his early forties when this was recorded, was particularly new). Featuring the cream of the crop - Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums, this is arguably Rivers masterpiece, and I need it on vinyl!

Available Formats: Vinyl Record, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Claire Martin

Claire Martin's first recording with her all-Swedish group - pianist Martin Sjöstedt, bassist Niklas Fernqvist and drummer Daniel Fredriksson - exploring outside of her usual songbook to cover pop songs like ‘Broken Wings’ by Mr. Mister (unsurprisingly improving the original) and a tasty lounge version of ‘I’m Not in Love’ by 10cc. I'm feelin' it.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Kino Trio brings together Bruno Heinen, Michele Tacchi’and Riccardo Chiaberta for an engaging set of original pieces composed by the group members with their colleagues in mind. Has a pleasing noir-esque vibe running through some of the pieces.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC
