New Release Round-up, Jazz New Releases Roundup - 5th April 2019

New Jazz Releases 5th April Are friends eclectic? Definitely appear to be this week as we've got a Professor Longhair album recorded live on a cruise ship in 1975 with Paul McCartney lurking somewhere in the audience, a revitalised Norwegian jazz trio, smooth Portugese songs, and lashing of jazz flute... plus my Recording of the Week, Orbit Folks Six, which I'm still listening to, post-review!

Ruby Rushton

Step aside Ron Burgundy – there’s a new jazz flute in town in the shape of Tenderlonious (aka Ed Cawthorne). The 4th album from his quartet Ruby Rushton, ‘Ironside’ is the groups most complete work to date and was recorded over a 2 day session at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The quartet’s fresh, high energy sound is rooted in the spiritual concepts of John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef, paying homage to The Headhunters and Weather Report heyday, whilst still adopting influences from hip hop, Afrobeat and the UK underground culture.

Available Format: CD

Salvador Sobral

Sounding a little like a Portuguese Jeff Buckley, Paris, Lisboa is Salvador Sobral’s second studio album, and his Warner debut. Produced by Joel Silva, the 12 songs are mostly sung in Portuguese, but also in Spanish, English and French, backed with charming low-key jazz arrangements. Give it a listen.

Available Format: CD

What is it with numbers as titles this week? First the Orbit Folks album Six and now 10, an enjoyable recording from the Helge Lien Trio. This is the first to feature new bassist Mats Eilertsen following the departure of founding member Frode Berg, and the new shake up certainly invigorates the group. Covers a wide range of moods, from chilled ‘n’ chilly to fiery workouts. Some innovative bass harmonics from Eilersten, obviously keen to make his mark!
