New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 29th March 2019

New Jazz Releases 29th March This week I have been listening to long-lost Japanese jazz-fusion from Akira Ishikawa, the latest transmissions from the London jazz underground via Cykada, wilful experimentation on the improv album Clinamen, Alberto Turra's gritty guitar trio and Catherine Russell's thoughtful interpretations of swing era tunes. Another eclectic week then, as it should be.

Catherine Russell

Tasteful interpretations of classic swing era tunes from vocalist Catherine Russell, on her seventh studio album as a leader. Her curatorial skills shine brightly, plucking compositions where the lyric and harmonic structure draw her in on a deeply personal level.

Available Format: CD

Cykada

More from the new London jazz underground! A mash up of jazz, disco rhythms, middle eastern scales and psychedelia. Bassist Jamie Benzies is the spine of the project, along with Tilé Gichigi-Lipere, also a fellow former member of the legendary band Myriad Forest, and drummer Tim Doyle aka Chiminyo and guests. Great fun, and cool cover art too!

Available Format: CD

Live at Easy Nuts Lab

The TAAN trio formed at the end of 2017 in order for Alberto Turra to test the strength of his own compositions in a group setting, outside of solo performance. With exciting use of electric guitar the album evokes classic guitar trios of the past from the likes of Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell etc.

Available Format: CD

Akira Ishikawa

Ultra-rare jazz-funk/fusion album by Japanese drummer, Akira Ishikawa. Some time-capsule worthy tunes on this thing, recalling other Japanese moog fusion releases from the seventies. Tracks include ‘Let’s Start’, ‘Bongo Rock’ and ‘Pick Up The Pieces’. ‘Back To Rhythm’ and cover versions of The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, BT Express, Stevie Wonder, Average White Band, Incredible Bongo Band and Fela Kuti. Originally released in Japan in 1975 by Columbia, this is the sort of thing Giles Peterson most likely has 2 copies of, an original is that rare! Be warned though - this does require a certain cheese threshold.
