Favourites, Suggestions for Starter Instruments

One of the more surprisingly difficult things when taking up a new instrument can be picking out your very first one. With many beginner-oriented options on the market today, it can be difficult to know where to look or what you should be looking for. We've put together a short list of our suggestions for the best starter instruments to help you get started playing sooner, rather than worrying about what you should be playing on!

We've picked models that we find represent a good compromise between cost and quality, giving you a great-playing instrument without breaking the bank, especially if it's still early days in your playing and you're unsure about committing to something expensive.

Many of these items are on display in our Leamington Spa shop, and though current restrictions mean that instrument trying is not possible, our shop staff are happy to talk you through and demonstrate them for you.

Fretted Strings

Jose Ferrer's 'Estudiante' model is an excellent entry-level instrument for someone looking to start playing classical (or 'nylon string') guitar, and is often recommended by teachers. Featuring the bright tone of a spruce top and a gloss finish, the Estudiante looks and sounds like a classical guitar ought.

Coming in three different sizes - 4/4, 3/4 and 1/2, there's a model to fit even the smallest players. Gig bag also included.

For someone who's able to spend a little more on their first instrument, you can do a lot worse than the Yamaha C40-II. Yamaha's flagship student classical guitar is the best value instrument for beginner classical players.

Also available in 3/4 size as the CS40-II.

Orchestral Strings

Another often-recommended instrument, the Stentor Student I violin is one of the best options for a starter violin under £150. Carved from solid woods and sporting a spruce top, the Student I will see young players through their first few grades of exams.

The Student I also includes a case, bow and rosin, so you'll have everything you need to get started right away, and is available in a number of different sizes. We recommend consulting your teacher or our shop staff if you are unsure on the best violin size for you.

For a little extra, more dedicated beginners may consider the Student II model, which ups the quality in many ways. Ebony wood tuning pegs give the violin greater tuning stability, while the sound of the Student II is undoubtedly fuller than its little brother.

Likewise, this instrument comes as a full outfit; case, bow and rosin included, and comes in multiple sizes.

Woodwind

Yamaha's student-level clarinet features an ABS resin body with a surprisingly warm tone for a synthetic clarinet, as well as nickel-plated keys with excellent build quality.

It also features an adjustable thumb-rest with a neck strap ring, which allows those with smaller hands to play the instrument more comfortably.

This model also includes a carry case, mouthpiece and cleaning cloths. Reeds must be purchased separately.

Aulos recorders are both affordable and great quality, making them some of the best value for money when looking for a starter plastic recorder. Easy to play and including a note fingering chart for beginners, the 'Elite' is a great way to get started on the recorder quickly. The price tag of the 'Elite' model also makes them a great option for classrooms.

Both Aulos recorders come with a bag, cleaning rod, and removable thumb rest.

For a little extra than the 'Elite' model, Aulos' 'Robin' model is one of the best plastic recorders on the market, with great response and tone throughout the register of the instrument.

Both Aulos recorders come with a bag, cleaning rod, and removable thumb rest.
