Founded in Manchester by the pianist and conductor Charles Hallé in 1858, the Hallé is among Britain's longest-established permanent professional symphony orchestras. Sir Mark Elder became Music Director in 2000, since when the Hallé has received increasing acclaim both in the UK and abroad. In 2003 the Hallé launched its own CD label of studio and live recordings, including acclaimed performances of Elgar, Debussy, Vaughan Williams and Wagner.
