About
Completely contrary to the usual image of JS Bach as a recluse in his ivory tower, Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti reveal his lively admiration for the Italian music of his time, particularly that of Vivaldi and the brothers Marcello. Here Bach discovered sunlight and luminous colours that never ceased to nourish and inspire his musical imagination.

I can't not mention the ensemble virtuosity over Brandenburg No 3's final Allegro: the thrill of such neatly, crisply rapid, superglued tutti playing, not least the three cellists' balance of delicacy and weight...Have I convinced you? I do hope so.

Beyer, very much first among equals here, is joined by the musicians of Gli Incogniti in spirited, light-of-foot performances...Three Brandenburg concertos positively sizzle. The connections, if occasionally on the tenuous side, are fascinating.
