About

Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques make a foray into the Romantic repertoire with this tribute to Pauline Viardot, who was not only the most influential singer of the nineteenth century, but also a pedagogue and composer, whose gifts, personality and incomparable aura made her one of the leading figures of French Romanticism.

Together the mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti and Christophe Rousset retrace Pauline Viardot’s versatile career and, taking up her great roles, present a musical portrait of a unique performer, who was unanimously acclaimed by the audiences of her time.

December 2022

Imperceptibly Viotti makes them her own, tender but tough in Rosina’s ‘Una voce poco fa’ and producing a cascade of diamondbright coloratura in ‘Bel raggio lusinghier’, as well as an astonishing glissando and an impressively ringing final top note.

January 2023

Viotti is an exciting and eclectic singer who, like her subject, is especially good at projecting the intensity of dramatic roles, which she sings with excellent diction in both French and Italian. Also like Viardot, Viotti has a wide range, with strong chest notes and an upper register that only rarely sounds forced and more frequently enchants with its ability to produce a splendidly controlled mezza voce.
