August 2021

Michael Barenboim and Kian Soltani are the concertmaster and principal cellist of the Barenboim-founded West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, so the stellar quality of their playing is no more a surprise than Barenboim’s richly detailed and hyper-alert accompanying which never dominates proceedings.

Argerich alternates seamlessly between truly soloistic playing and a more self-effacing approach to quasi-accompaniment filigree material, though at times she combines both…The way this duo captures the [violin] sonata’s changing moods is remarkable; it seems clichéd to attribute this to their familial relationship but that must be a factor…there are moments of unusual stillness in the first movement [of La mer] that many other accounts lack.
