About
Next to Segovia, Julian Bream is one of the greatest classical guitarists of all time. Included in this album are never released before live performances of the young Bream from the Aldeburgh Festivals of 1958 and 1959, playing the lute and the guitar in solo works, in songs with tenor Peter Pears, and in chamber combinations with Aurèle Nicolet (flute) and George Malcolm (harpsichord). Virtuosic classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream was born in 1933 in England. One of the most distinguished guitarists of the 20th century, he played an important role in improving the public perception of the classical guitar as a respectable instrument. Throughout his career he has been awarded numerous awards, and has had many pieces dedicated to him.

Bream was a frequent visitor to the Aldeburgh Festival and, in 1958, he performed with Peter Pears in a well-paced set of Dowland songs and lute solos, which found both at the top of their game. Pears is too forward in the balance of this live recording at times, though.
