May 2018

Shelley is his usual reliable self, making light of technical difficulties, and breathing life into neglected corners of the repertoire. Some of these pieces are short on memorable ideas, but there’s no mistaking their innate musicality, and it isn’t hard to understand why Schumann welcomed Bennett with open arms.

March 2018

Shelley is far more daring [than Binns, on an earlier recording], savouring and often sculpting the virtuoso flights of fancy – and, in general, elicits a wealth of expressive detail from material that might appear unremarkable on its surface…What impresses me most in Shelley’s interpretation is how he makes the ornamental sound meaningfully expressive…This generously packed, beautifully recorded disc is…simply revelatory.
