“Bach…where everything begins.”

Since the 18th century, a number of compos-ers have paid hommage to Jean-Sebastian Bach, often considered the musical touch-stone: the perfect balance between science, form, expression and emotion.

Preludes and Fugues; transcriptions; or the mu-sical motif made from the letters of his name: these hommages have come in many forms. In the captivating and fascinating programme by Lise de la Salle, we find works by Bach himself, Poulenc, Busoni, Roussel and Liszt. And then, like a fresh breath of air from the heart of our current century, interspersed be-tween the works of the masters we find four new pieces commissioned from the pianist Thomas Enhco. The result is an essential, modern recording, an unprecedented journey into the essence of music, in which Lise de la Salle exhibits all her pianistic talent, as well as a profound in-tellectual knowledge.

It’s a long-considered recording, subtle yet powerful, that marks the 15th anniversary of the rich collaboration between Naïve and Lise de la Salle.

The precocious Lise de la Salle has always been an individual pianist, offering interpretations of great insight even at an early age. Here, she reaffi rms her status in Bach with a stunning Italian Concerto, limpid and near-perfect in the Andante, magnificently assertive in the first movement, and bright, outgoing and fluently fleet-fingered in the finale. She then pushes the envelope to offer pieces inspired by or based on Bach. Four short pieces by Thomas Enhco offer breathing spaces, two of which themselves use material by Bach. The intent of this recording is to work with Bach’s ‘timelessness’, and the sheer scope, compressed into a mere 55 minutes, is remarkable. Technically impeccable, beautifully recorded and stimulatingly conceived, the disc is a pure winner.

'Bach is to the pianist what the barre is to the dancer,' writes Lise de la Salle, and there is indeed something dancerly in the dynamism and precision she brings to the music on this disc...It’s quite a mix, but De la Salle’s compelling playing makes it hang together.
