Dieter Schnebel, composer and theologian, was born in 1930 and has become one of the foremost composers of contemporary music. Susanne Elgeti’s film is a sensitive portrait of this multi-faceted personality, vividly conveying Schnebel’s relationship to music, which resists all dogmatic restrictions. In the midst of the moving private situation he shared with his wife of many years, Iris Schnebel-Kaschnitz, we see the evolution of Schnebel’s latest large composition, 'Utopien'. The film gradually reveals not only the broad range of the composer’s music and ideas, but also provides insights into the personal challenges of old age. An authentic look into the life and work of one of the most important participants in the musical developments of the 20th and 21st centuries.
