About

György Ligeti (1923-2006) counts among the most eminent figures in music history. Numerous of his works have entered the collective memory of human mankind and essentially belong to the international concert repertoire of today.

This new CD release includes most brilliant new interpretations of three concert works from different stages in Ligeti’s artistic career. Fascinating sound extremes in his Cello Concerto from the sixties meet the ludicrous theatricality of his Mysteries of the Macabre from the seventies and the stunning polyrhythmic effects of his Piano Concerto from the eighties.

All three works here are presented by celebrated soloists of the younger generation and the internationally acclaimed Plural Ensemble from Spain under its chief conductor and composer Fabián Panisello.

Awards and reviews

Awards Issue 2015

Does any work being more quietly than Ligeti's Cello Concerto? The soloist creeps in at pppppppp, and Nicolas Altstaedt manages a more restrained attack than any I've heard on disc...Pacing is sure, and the recording captures all the subtle timbres which Ligeti demands from his small ensemble...[in Mysteries of the Macabre] Marco Blaauw yields to none in his virtuosity.

March 2015

the NEOS engineers have found an excellent balance for Nicolas Altstaedt and his colleagues in the Italian PluralEnsemble...The Piano Concerto demands a much more extrovert approach, and here Alberto Rosado is hard-working but restrained in both balance and temperament...The members of PluralEnsemble evidently enjoy themselves in the riotous outer movements.
