For his inaugural concert as Music Director of Orchestre de la Suisse Romande , Neeme Järvi chose to perform two compositions that approach the same subject, life’s end, in ways that demonstrate the brilliance and differences of their creators. Are they really about death, or life? In both these works – one a tone poem intended to tell a story through music, the other a symphony with sung texts - there is a reflection on what life has been, its rewards and shortcomings, that culminates in a cathartic moment of revelation. The two singers, Thomas Hampson and Paul Groves add charismatic and poignant erformances of the highest order.
