As with Magdalen’s The Mikado (METCD8002), D’Oyly Carte’s 1957 recording of The Pirates of Penzance has always been considered to be one of the liveliest and best sung performances of this work made since the war.

With so many highlights it is difficult to know where to start but pride of place must go to Thomas Round, whose Frederic is unmatched. Peter Pratt’s acting experience shows in his interpretation of the Major-General. Donald Adams and Jean Hindmarsh complete a magnificent cast recorded in superb early stereo.

Bonus items never before released on CD include G & S medleys for Harry Davidson’s dance band and Ralph Hunter’s choral versions of evergreens from G & S arranged in a way that anticipates the Broadway Pirates.
