Pietro Torri was born in Italy in 1650 and in 1684 became organist and court Kapellmeister in Bayreuth. In 1689 he was appointed organist by the Elector of Bavaria and remained in his service for the rest of his career. This work should be considered as the first dramatic oratorio ever to be composed in French. The material is drawn from events in the Apocrypha and from the lives of the saints.

In Le martyre des Maccabées, recitative, binary air, choruses and interludes merge naturally, the scoring is imaginative, and tender airs, particularly those with flute accompaniment, are finely shaped. Tubéry is alert to these strengths in Torri's writing... His judicious rubatos allow tender passages to linger; robust metres sweep us through dance-based sections, and dynamic shading highlights the subtleties of Torri's word-setting. Recorded 'live', this disc captures the excitement of the event without compromising on sound quality.
