Barely represented on disc a generation ago, Rachmaninov's orchestral works are firm favourites these days, and it's no surprise Naxos has entered the lists. Can Anissimov hope to compete in a field that includes Ashkenazy's highoctane digital accounts in sundry bargain formats? Perhaps surprisingly the answer is yes, for the conductor produces a highly distinctive performance of the Third, inspiring his orchestra to playing of considerable warmth and flair. Sound quality is excellent, too. String tone is crucially important with this composer, and here again any worries prove unfounded. Not for Anissimov the 'neurotic' Russianness of Ashkenazy's Rachmaninov. Like Jansons, he disregards the first-movement exposition repeat, but he makes the orchestral voices speak with a gentler tone.
There are shattering climaxes when the music calls for them, and the symphony ends in rousing style; elsewhere the sophisticated languor and careful phrasing recall Previn's famous recording. Although some will be disappointed with the generally slow tempos, there's an unusual wholeness of musical vision and pacing which never sacrifices the needs of the larger structure to the lure of momentary thrills.
Despite the short measure, this is thoroughly recommendable at the price.
