Our guest contributor Rob Cowan speaks to the writer and broadcaster John Suchet about his eighth (!) book on Beethoven (published by Elliott & Thompson Limited last month), exploring why he finds the man and his music so endlessly fascinating, some of the people who have helped him to appreciate them more deeply, how his own personal relationship with Beethoven's works has shifted over the years, and the solace which he has drawn from them during troubled times.
Born in London 14th April, 1948. 19-year stint with Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishing (including 11 years as music archivist); a broadcaster for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM (1992-2020); Contributing Editor, Gramophone Magazine; Member of the Royal Society Musicians; Grammy Award winner 1995 (notes written for ‘Best Historical Album’, The Heifetz Collection); Author of Guinness Classical 1000; Marries Georgina Gilmore in 1971. Two daughters, Francesca (45) and Victoria (42); granddaughter Elizabeth (5). Hobbies include reading (John Ruskin, Wallace Stevens and Emily Dickinson are particular loves).
