Luís Toscano, director of Portuguese vocal consort Cupertinos, talks about the group's new recording of two previously unrecorded masses by Duarte Lobo plus Christmas responsories and motets.

No fewer than three important ﬁrst recordings of works by Duarte Lobo feature on an album which is set to enhance Cupertinos’ burgeoning reputation. This is music with which they feel a natural kinship, as these intense, idiomatic performances attest.

The neglect of this glorious music is difficult to understand, but Toscano and others before him have at least begun to let us hear this late aspect of the Renaissance that flourished in Portugal. The Cupertinos bring a native enthusiasm and love to these performances that place them ahead of all others.

For aficionados of Golden Age polyphony, this is all self-recommending...That’s all without Cupertinos’ distinctive qualities, which are as evident here as on their debut: a very open sound, with the astringent tones of the female singers very much to the fore thanks to an equally bright acoustic.

It’s expressive, beautifully crafted and variegated polyphony, Portugal’s equivalent of Palestrina perhaps...ten young Cupertinos singers engage with their rich national heritage with well-projected, exquisitely blended singing, though sometimes one yearns for slightly more spacious phrasing.
