Jacques Imbrailo (Baritone)
Born: 1978
Nationality: South African
Jacques Imbrailo was born in South Africa in 1978 and studied at Potchefstroom Campus (where he read law alongside music), the Royal College of Music, and on the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at Covent Garden; early successes included making the finals of the 2006 Kathleen Ferrier Competition, the Audience Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition the following year, and the vocal category at the Royal Overseas League Competition. He came to international prominence in the title-role of Billy Budd at Glyndebourne in 2010 (‘a total joy – slight, lithe and wonderfully guileless’ - The Guardian), and returned to the festival in 2017 to create the role of Horatio in Brett Dean’s Hamlet. Other key roles include Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, and Debussy’s Pélleas.
